It was 03.09.92 Cap Center. The first set had been strong but not overwhelmingly so. The second set opens with Victim>Aiko and then into Corinna, A Hornsby led jam is sounding good but midway into it Jerry disapears off stage. Jam intensifies and within a few minutes we got ourselves a Dark Star as our Awol guitar player returns.

Ever have a show that went somewhere you weren't expecting?

Dude in the ultralight buzzing the crowd during Birdsong, Oxford 88.

OK, not so much show or song related, but in terms of the unexpected overall it is up there.

Spectrum spring '85:

'Space > The Other One > Throwin Stones' ...

hmm. ok, no problem, Jerry skipped a song, here he comes.

'Not Fade Away' ...

hmmm. ok, no problem, Jerry forgot to jump in. we are about to get a monumental Dew or something.

'the boys go off stage'

hmmmm. where'd Jerry go? no problem, we are about to get a crazy Jerry break out as an encore.

'One More Sat Night'

hmmmmm. what happened to Jerry? no problem, we're getting a double encore.

'Good night'

WHAT!!

That was the last thing I was expecting. Jerry off the board for the entire post space run.

Looking back though, it should not have come as a surprise. In all my years of listening to the Dead, that's about as bad as I have heard Jerry sound.

I think he had bronchitis at those shows....so that would explain the lack of singing. He certainly made up for it with his playing and great song selection during those two last two nights though

that's funny. Rumor has it at a gig in Nassau, I believe, spring 91, the setlist is so short because one band member was having a really bad night along the lines you mention. They make up for it, somewhat, with a Terrapin encore

Whole second set of 11/1/85. Whale of a show but virtually impossible to call from the floor.

You mean you weren't expecting the Gloria. When they broke it out, my friends and I just looked at each other and said "Oh, gee, not this again."

Right. Best single moment I've had at a show.

No, not just the Gloria. The entire set was a great piece of work for that time.

Hadn't opened a 2nd set with Samson since March.

High Time and He's Gone had not been played in the same set since the Garden 82 and NEVER back to back before.

Then into a Spoonful which was beginning to peak it's head out but was still only the 15th ever played

Back into Comes a Time!! which was only the 2nd East Coast performance since 80. And God how sweet it was.

Now we have THREE Garcia ballets in the first 1/2 of the second set INTO a Weir Ballet "Sailor" which is fast becoming rare at that point - Only 3 more played afterward.
Couple this with a SPLIT Sailor / Saint which had also NEVER been done before. There had been stand alone versions but never a split when played in the same show.

Phil fired up and visably toking on stage getting pumped for the 2nd half of the set and firing off Saint before delving into one of his favorites at the time - Gimme some Lovin'
Just started playing it in Late 84 and Phil was singing on it - This was before his official LEAD singing which started in spring 85

All this into "She Belongs to ME" with it's new slowed down tempo, Garcia seemingly crying onstage. People were just shitting their pants already!!!

NOW - Throw in your G-L-O-R-I-A - Enough said.

Encore - What in the world could encore after this. The anticipation was like I've never felt at a show. Anything was possible at this point.

KEEP YOUR DAY JOB!

Now don't you EVER ask why people hate this song!

For what it is worth, for some reason none of the recordings capture this shows energy at all.

Yup, the recordings I've heard, aud and boards, all sound flat. My friends who weren't at this show heard me talk about it for years and when the DP came out, they looked at me like I was nuts. Well, if you were in that auditorium, you'll never forget that power. Still gives me shivers to think about.

Well, there was the fact that we got "High Time" AND "He's Gone" AND "Comes A Time" all before drums, and I believe it was the only time "Sailor>Saint" was bisected by drums/space.

No one is going to believe this but Cliff called the Gloria; before the show, during the second set and about 30 seconds before. The dude next to Cliff told him he was insane...

Hershey Park summer '85

Jerry cuts off Bird Song right in the middle and goes into a Comes a Time, then into Deal, for the first and only modern era Garcia trifecta (I think?).

runner up: Gimme Some Lovin > Deal to open a spring '86 Philly show.

There were at least a couple more trifectas: There were at least two Scarlet>Touch>Fires in '84. I'll never get sick of that transition from Scarlet to Touch from 7/13/84.

And on 4/27/85 you had Scarlet>Eyes>GDTRFB

Sugaree,

Yeah the Birdsong > Comes a Time > Deal was a shocker. I would have loved to been in Garcia's mind at that moment when he moves from Birdsong to Comes a Time. Loved that entire show.

Funny thing - I run into a guy about a month later and were wrapping about shows we saw on the summer tour. He says "Hershey sucked, Jerry just drops Birdsong and never finishes it" - I never looked at him the same way again.

Also remember the Philly show. Gimme some Lovin' > Deal is followed by first ever Hand Jive.
